Please Join us April 14th for a Jade District Open House!

Please join us Saturday, April 14th at Fubonn Supermarket from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the Jade District Open House!  Help us shape the future of the Jade District by informing our work on investing approximately $750,000 in resources over the next five years in projects that will serve to stabilize the Jade District Community.

This is an opportunity to learn, explore, and shape the future of the Jade District.  We are building on work that we’ve done over the last four years, following up with the Jade District Visioning that we completed in 2014.  You can see that report here, and we will share the progress we’ve made over the past four years. Our question now is: What’s next?

Our biggest wins and most visible projects were directly related to community outreach and input that were included in the visioning. One idea many folks shared was a desire for community gatherings that reflected the culture in the Jade District.  Today, we are now in the middle of planning the fifth annual Jade International Night Market.  Over the last four years, we’ve drawn over 20,000 people to the Jade District each year.

We also heard that folks, like in many neighborhoods, continue to experience rising housing costs and a lack of common community space.  We supported a capital campaign to build a multicultural center in a mixed-use affordable housing development.  As many folks have seen, that vision is also becoming a reality with the development of the JAMS space on the corner of SE 82nd Ave and Division Street.

We also heard about a lack of green space in the neighborhood.  A community garden took shape over the past four years and now serves as a gathering place.  This work is led by volunteers at the school and a partnership with Outgrowing Hunger. Still there remains a barrier for folks that live south of Division street.  It is a parks deficient area and surrounded by high-crash corridors.

What’s Next?

As we win high impact victories based on community feedback, we continue to want to gather authentic, community-led visions for what will help stabilize this community.  If you are in the neighborhood or rely on the community anchors and businesses in the Jade District, please join us in shaping our work and our next major investment Saturday, April 14th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

We will provide childcare, interpretation and food from the local businesses!
